Today, at the Founder’s Corner, we’re focusing on how to make better decisions when we find ourselves at the crossroads of goal setting. This can be a tough, and often overwhelming space to be in. But keep reading because I’m sharing 3 clarifying questions you can ask yourself when you’re at a crossroads and need some help with the decision-making process!

But first…

The Founder’s Corner posts are based on previous segments from our weekly newsletter. So if you want this type of content first, check out the link at the end of this post!

Now, let’s dive into today’s post!

Goal Setting and the Decision-Making Process

In the spirit of the New Year and the task of setting goals for yourself, I wanted to touch on something that is sometimes overlooked in this season.

During the goal-setting process, more often than not, we are faced with some daunting crossroads. So what do you do when a potential goal brings you to a fork in the road? What tools do you use when you get to these crossroads and you are unsure of which path to take?

goal setting: make better decisions

The tricky thing about a goal with different outcomes is, how do you pick up speed to accomplish the goal if you don’t know the destination?

Now, it feels like so far it’s just been a series of questions. Which is quite fitting since my strategy for making a decision at a fork in the road is to ask myself three clarifying questions…

But more on that later!

First, let’s look at some tools for making big decisions.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Albert Einstein

Inevitably, when you face a fork in the road you might also be faced with a big decision. Whether that’s to start a podcast, or not? To leave your job, or not? To start a business, or not? To get married, start a family, move countries… the list goes on!

So where do you start?

Tony Robbins laid out Four Rules for decision-making, which include:

  1. Write it down
  2. Get clear about your feelings
  3. Let go of fear
  4. Recognize your values

This strategy has worked wonders when making big decisions. Once you become clear on the obstacle/opportunity in front of you and know what you value, you can move past the fear and take the right road for YOU!

Read more on that here

So to get even more clear on which path to take, let’s dive into those three clarifying questions to help you make a decision when you are faced with the fork in the road.

Goal Setting: 3 Clarifying Questions For When You are Faced with the Fork in the Road

1. Where in your life do you desire something more?

In which area of your life, business, podcast, wellness, etc. are you constantly craving something better? Something more than what you’ve achieved thus far?

This is a strong indication that it’s time to make a change and to pivot towards that new desire.

Whether this is changing up the format of your podcast, spending more time writing, or even focusing on building your personal brand – there are always new opportunities for “more”!

2. What truth are you ignoring?

If you’re standing at the crossroads there is always something that led you there to begin with. So what are you avoiding looking at because it’s too hard or uncomfortable to deal with? What is your inconvenient truth?

This can be as simple as a marketing strategy that isn’t working, or a sponsor partnership that is no longer aligned. Or it can be as life-changing as knowing when to call it quits or when it’s time to do a complete overhaul of your podcast or your personal brand.

Whether you’re starting over or starting something new, it’s scary and disruptive for your comfort zone, either way. But once you’ve nailed down the truth and faced it head-on, your path forward becomes so much clearer and you can make the best decision for yourself.

3. What do you need to let go of?

Now that you know where you want to go and what you need to change, it’s time to take a closer look at your habits, strategies, and activities and to get brutally honest. Which do you want to change? And what do you need to let go of in order to move forward?

I read today that “if you want to be the noun, first do the verb” (a poetic message by Austin Kleon here).

This absolutely hit home for me!

If you want to be a podcaster, record podcast episodes. If you want to be a writer, then spend time writing! It’s time to let go of what you’re trying to “be” and focus on actually doing the work to get there.

All this said, there are two important things to remember when you hit that fork in the road:

Takeaway Points for How to Make Better Decisions…

► One: There is no right or wrong answer. Make sure to gather as much information to make the best decision for YOU!

► Two: Nothing is set in stone. Make a decision, test it out, re-evaluate, and pivot if necessary.

Today, at the Founder’s Corner, we’re tackling a big one…how to turn mistakes into opportunities! Let’s be honest, no one enjoys making mistakes. But mistakes are a part of life. And so today, I want to share the strategy I’ve used to help me reshape my relationship with mistakes and rather turn them into opportunities.

But first…

The Founder’s Corner posts are based on previous segments from our weekly newsletter. So if you want this type of content first, check out the link at the end of this post!

Now, let’s dive into today’s post!

How to Turn Mistakes into Opportunities

As 2023 came to an end, I couldn’t help but reflect on all that has happened throughout last year. Everything from successes, to failures, to big lessons – they come to mind all at once!

But as I was reviewing all the events, there’s something that I’ve been stuck on… where can I see the growth?

“Mistakes are a fact of life. It is the response to error that counts.”

Nikki Giovanni

Mistakes and failures are inevitable. That’s life!

But what I’ve come to learn is that they are much easier to swallow when you’ve turned them into opportunities. This can be through:

  • Personal growth.
  • Doing things better.
  • Making a mindset shift.
  • Taking a necessary reset.

More often than not, mistakes in podcasting are simply a result of something you haven’t yet learned, testing a new process, human error, and so on.

It’s not that you’re purposefully setting out to make mistakes or fail. You simply might not know the best way to do things yet.

Enter… opportunity!

As you learn new methods, and what works best you not only improve personally as a podcast host, but you can guide and teach others to do the same.

So what does it look like when you make this mindset shift?

Let’s dive into my Triple-A Framework for how to turn mistakes into opportunities.

The Triple-A Framework for How To Turn Mistakes into Opportunities

1. Acknowledge

Its Me Hi Im The Problem Its Me Taylor Swift GIF - Its Me Hi Im The Problem Its Me Taylor Swift Anti Hero GIFs: turn mistakes into opportunities

The first step towards growth is to actually acknowledge the mistakes you’ve made. Set out to find those valuable learning lessons and note them on your journey.

On top of that, find ways that you can improve. Where are the opportunities for real growth and how can you capitalize on them?

So whether you accidentally mixed up your calendar dates and missed a podcast interview, or you forgot to select the right microphone for your recording, step out and claim it!

From there, you can only do better! With things like a scheduling calendar that sends out reminders, or a proper pre-interview checklist – you can get it done!

2. Analyze

Once you’ve recognized your mistakes and failures, now you can capitalize on learning from them in order to teach others. Analyze exactly where things went wrong, how you can do it differently moving forward, and what you’ve learned along the way.

“Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.”

Margaret J. Wheatley

Continue to analyze each learning opportunity by reflecting on your progress as you go. This will help you to see the path more clearly so you can always start better the next time!

This is especially true for your podcast. For example, the more you teach others about your podcasting process, the better your process becomes in turn.

Analyzing every aspect helps iron out all the kinks. And who knows? Perhaps your solution could be useful to others as well.. ding*ding* business opportunity!

3. Adapt

And finally, the best way to ensure that mistakes aren’t repeated is to always have a learning mindset. When you use the feedback life gives you and you remain teachable, you are much more likely to be able to adapt to challenging situations.

Be sure to put your learnings into practice! Apply what you’ve learned so you can actually reap the benefits, turning those mistakes into opportunities.

Final Takeaway!

The podcast industry is changing all the time, with new technologies, new platforms, new equipment, or even podcasting styles – you name it!

Staying true to this learning mindset and allowing yourself to easily adapt is key for seizing those opportunities for your podcast.

When we learn from our mistakes and try to find the opportunities in each situation, you will see tremendous growth and improvement through these valuable lessons.

So find the lessons, strategize a plan, and adapt!

Nathaniel Ernst is a kinesiologist and personal trainer in Calgary, Alberta. He is the owner-operator of NATEFIT Integrated Fitness and Nutrition, taking a sustainable approach to health and fitness. He also hosts the Down and Dirty Podcast, where he delves into health and fitness topics as an extension of NATEFIT’s mission.

Today’s episode explores what it means to infuse your personal passion into your business and truly integrate your podcast into your business model. Nate gives us a welcome reminder that it’s natural to have a list of fears when you first create your own podcast and that everyone has to start somewhere! We also talk about the immeasurable value of time and why it is the greatest investment you can make in your podcast, plus so much more.

Takeaways From This Episode:

Nate’s journey has been all about turning his personal passions and interests into a career, and it shows! His passion for learning and connecting with others inspired the launch of his podcast, Down and Dirty, which acts as an extension of NATEFIT today.

Beyond interviewing his guests, Nate’s goal is to have a conversation that allows listeners to learn as they get to know each person and hear their story. His primary goal is to equip his listeners with actionable tools and practical knowledge to support their health and fitness journeys.

The Down and Dirty Podcast might not be what you think of when you think of health and fitness, but that’s exactly why Nate chose the name. It’s a little provocative and sparks curiosity to inspire listeners to press play!

The biggest obstacle Nate faced when starting his podcast was getting comfortable enough to move beyond the fear of being criticized. He also had to learn how to put each guest at ease before hitting record. This is a reminder that we are not alone in those initial fears that we have when starting a podcast.

Podcasting has changed how Nate interacts with his clients; connecting with them and asking questions to truly understand their experience. He uses his podcast to expand his knowledge to better serve his clients, truly integrating it into the fabric of his business

His most non-negotiable resource is undoubtedly the time he invests in his podcast. His advice is to value your time and recognize that it is the best investment that you can make in your podcast.

Quotes:

“The primary goal [of the Down and Dirty podcast] is to equip listeners with actionable tools and knowledge. I want to share knowledge with the listeners while I learn.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:06:25]

“I try not to make it an interview. I want people to really get to know the guests and feel a part of the conversation. That’s how I learn best. I think that’s a great way to engage the audience as well.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:06:45]

“Something that I started to notice throughout the podcast is [that] I have this unique opportunity to have these guests on where I probably wouldn’t have had a deep conversation with them before.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:13:46]

“[Know] that you’re not alone. It’s natural to have fears. Everyone is starting from somewhere.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:19:15]

“My biggest piece of advice is just be you. Be authentically you.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:25:23]

First up…Happy New Year to our wonderful podcast community! Here’s to an incredible 2024! Now, whether you took a break over the festive season or not, today’s Founder’s Corner post is for you! Because we’re diving into a seriously under-appreciated way to take effective breaks, whether that be a podcast break, a work break, or a [fill-in-the-blank] break – no matter the time of year.

Trust us…it’s going to be fun……

But first…

The Founder’s Corner posts are based on previous segments from our weekly newsletter. So if you want this type of content first, check out the link at the end of this post!

Now, let’s dive into today’s post!

How To Take Effective Breaks

*Note: While this post does focus on podcast breaks, this strategy can be applied to almost all areas!

One of the biggest questions podcasters ask themselves is whether or not they can or should take a break from their podcast.

More often than not, a break is directly related to a drop in listeners, so this is not always the best option.

However, there are tons of ways to work around this while still getting in that much-needed break!

Some of these ways include:

  • Creating short-form content for your podcast.
  • Batch-recording episodes and scheduling ahead.
  • Pulling episodes from the archives for reruns.
  • Planning some juicy episodes for the new year!

So what are your next steps?

The key lies in creating what I like to call an “alternate podcast schedule”. In other words, finding ways to make podcasting feel like a break without actually taking a break from your regular publishing schedule!

If you’ve been around here for a while, you’ve heard me say this over and again: consistency is key!

But that doesn’t mean you can’t be consistent and well-rested!

Now, drumroll please….here’s my not-so-secret strategy…

Instead of focusing on a “break”, try making the mindset shift to having more FUN!

how to take effective breaks: fun is as good as a podcast break

Yes, that’s right… I’m saying, “Bring on the FUN!”

Fun Is As Good As a Break!

So now, let the effective breaks fun begin! Let’s dig into three ways to make podcasting feel like a holiday!

1. Host a Podcast Party

Who doesn’t love a good party? And what better way to have some fun and make your podcasting feel like a break than by hosting a holiday podcast party!

What does this look like, you might wonder?

Well, it can be anything from doing a live recording, to engaging your audience in the event, doing a virtual movie review or watch-a-thon, a virtual “pub quiz”, or even inviting a few of your favorite podcasters or guests on to the show for a little collaborative party behind the mic!

You could celebrate a podcast mile stone, a personal event, or just make it a “just because” celebration.

The options are endless! Just depends on what your vision is for your podcast party. So get planning!

2. Focus on Relaxation and Stress-Relief

A little R&R is exactly what you need to make your podcast feel like a holiday!

Whether you invite on an expert on stress relief or have someone on to give your listeners a much-needed self-care guide, everyone is ready for a few great tips on reducing the stress and chaos in our busy lives!

Let your podcast feel like a spa day, reduce stress levels, and build in that much-needed break!

3. Take an Off-Script Approach

And finally, for my last fun-focused way to have a podcast break, let loose! Try taking an off-script approach to your next couple of episodes. This is your time to finally color outside the lines a bit! Give yourself permission to take on some bold topics, create episodes you’ve always wanted to, or even bring on a guest or co-host to do a mini-series as a break from your usual content.

This approach allows you to cut down on some parts of your podcast process, giving you more time for some R&R in between, while still serving your audience and giving them valuable content.

So, be BOLD! Go off-script, and have the most fun!

Effective Breaks with Actually Stopping Your Podcast is Totally Possible!

If there’s one thing that should be clear from my not-so-secret strategies for having an effective break from your podcast without actually stopping is that FUN is the key! Changing it up and opening yourself and your listeners up to some fun is a great way to help you feel like you’re taking a break without losing your podcast momentum.

The goal?

Serve your listeners by creating an unexpected experience every step of the way! They get great content, and you give yourself something new and rewarding to try.

After all, they do say a change is as good as a rest! And a fun change must be even better!

At Business Beyond the Mic (and We Edit Podcasts) 2023 has been all about reinvention. Not to change who you are, but to continuously work on becoming a better version of who you were yesterday, last month, or last year! During this special New Year’s Eve episode, we are exploring how podcasting has changed how we do business and life.

Looking back on an incredible start to the Business Beyond the Mic Podcast, we draw out the highlights from every conversation, where our guests share the personal and professional perks of hosting a podcast. From listening, learning and communicating, passion and purpose, business savvy and more, each guest has been profoundly impacted by their journey into this fascinating form of media.

Takeaways From This Episode:

Building a podcast can open the door to incredible connections and opportunities. Our first guest, Elise Museles, shared how hosting Once Upon a Food Story has made her a better listener, which has changed how she runs her personal and professional relationships. On Episode 2, Brittany Hodak describes how her podcast has facilitated her thriving network.

Purpose and passion are two ingredients to a successful podcast and a fulfilling life! Going back to your ‘why’ in the challenging moments is what’s going to help you continue down this path, just like Ashley Menzies Babatunde, from No Straight Path. Jeni Barcelos and Sandy Connery share how podcasting has made them better businesswomen, and thinkers.

Abagail Pumphrey of Strategy Hour reminds us that the value of a podcast goes beyond dollars and downloads. Creating value for your audience can support retention, education, and much more. It can create value for you too! Kristi Bridges shares that hosting the Irresistible Factor has given her great insights into her client’s needs, by interviewing them about their experience.

Amina Altai shares how her podcast, Amina Change Your Life, has reignited her spark of curiosity to meet and get to know new people. Kathy Caprino, of Finding Brave, goes on to remind us that beyond satisfying our curiosity, a network is a wonderful source of collaboration and support. Part of the magic of podcasting is that it facilitates meeting new people!

A podcast can be a resource for your existing clients and a platform to bring new ideas to life. Heather Pearce Campbell shares how hosting her podcast has enabled her to expand the ways in which she serves them. Lauren Teague, host of the Brand to Fan Show, highlights the power of consistency and finding the courage to put your ideas into the world. Todd Patrick of the Next Page Podcast shares how podcasting has made him more patient with and considerate of others, while his co-host, Laura Patrick, highlights how it has helped her to master time management.

Tim Truax of the Nerd Room and the Podcast Experience shares how podcasting has given him a newfound sense of confidence. Senda Ben Abdallah talks about the role of podcasting in helping her to be more present in conversation. Podcasting can also have some unexpected perks.

It’s hard to believe that the festive season is already here, and as a podcaster, it can be a pretty crazy time! Joining us to explore the best holiday practices for podcasters is Jennay Horn, our very own Content Director at We Edit Podcasts!

In the spirit of the season, we use today’s episode to reflect on the past year and the many lessons we’ve learned from launching our flagship podcast, Business Beyond the Mic. You’ll hear our tips on how to make the holiday season extra special, from decorating your space to choosing festive topics for your bonus episodes, plus essential strategies on how to keep your momentum going over the holiday break. We also share our favorite selection of podcasts for getting into the holiday spirit and our advice going into the new year. Stay tuned for a delightful episode whose stocking is filled to the brim with festive joy!

Takeaways From This Episode:

To engage with your audience during the holidays, consider decorating your podcasting space and sharing holiday-related content. This could involve discussing your personal rituals, exploring stress-relief tips for the holidays, or delving into the history of holiday traditions. You can also create bonus episodes outside of your regular schedule, focusing on festive topics like favorite holiday movies, allowing you to stay connected with your audience in a fun and seasonal way.

For podcasters, maintaining momentum can be a key ally in your podcasting experience. But making time to switch off and take a break is also important. Luckily, there are some great strategies you can use to take time off without losing that hard-earned momentum, like recording in advance, doing batch recordings, and making sure all your social posts are ready to go. And don’t forget to communicate with your audience! They’ll want to know if you’re taking time off or have special holiday episodes coming up. The holidays are a great time to explore themed podcasts celebrating the festive season. Carli and Jennay share some of their favorites, including ‘Tis The Grinch Holiday Talk Show hosted by the green monster himself. This one isn’t just for the kids, parents will love the dry humor this curmudgeonly creature is known for! And if you’re feeling stressed, The Calm Christmas podcast with Beth Kempton is another wonderful recommendation to help you deal with the added anxiety that often accompanies this time of year.

For Carli, pivoting from being a full-time mom and getting back into her demanding role at We Edit Podcasts has been a joy, but the learning curve has been crazy on all fronts. While there are goals she had hoped to achieve by the end of the year, the amount she and her team have managed to accomplish in such a short time has been phenomenal. As we reflect and look towards the new year, it’s important to take stock of not only your wins, but also your misses, and embrace what you can learn from that.

When you host a podcast, you get to chat with some phenomenal guests, which has been one of the most exciting aspects of launching Business Beyond The Mic. From adopting a beginner’s mindset in podcasting to streamlining the process, Carli shares the biggest lessons she’s learned from guests this past year — and why she can’t wait for all the fascinating guests she gets to learn from once January rolls around!

If there’s one piece of advice that Jennay has for listeners as we go into the new year, it’s this: be kind to yourself. While it may sound cliché, it’s essential not to be too hard on yourself. Instead of measuring success solely by metrics or numbers, reflect on the areas where you’ve experienced personal growth throughout the year. When you look at all these different areas, you’ll realize you achieved a lot more than you think you did!

Quotes:

“There’s a lot of options out there to keep your momentum going without actually having to put in the work during the holidays.” — Carli van Heerden [0:11:24]

“We’re looking forward to the new year, but I think it’s so important to reflect and take stock of where you are. Look at your wins, maybe the misses and see what you can learn from that.” — Jennay Horn [0:20:05]

“My word this year has been reinventing — and it’s not to change who you are. It’s to continuously be working on yourself day by day, so that you are a better version of yourself than you were yesterday.” — Carli van Heerden [0:24:25]

“Look back at the year. You don’t have to measure success by your metrics. You don’t have to measure success by numbers. Look at the places that you’ve grown.” — Jennay Horn [0:31:12]

“Be kind to yourself in terms of what you have achieved. You really have achieved a lot if you look back and spread the glance back over so many different areas.” — Jennay Horn [0:31:32]

“Your time is valuable. Find ways to streamline it, so that you can love what you do, continue to love what you do, and enjoy spending time with those around you. Find those systems and those habits that really save you time and maximize your output.” — Jennay Horn [0:31:43]

“Maximize the output from less input, so that you always pour from a full cup.” — Jennay Horn [0:32:02]

The festive season is in full swing. And as we all know, it can be a crazy time. It’s full of fun, family, festivities, and yummy food. But it can also be a time of deadlines, pressure, stress, and anxiety. So, because of all of this, we’ve been focusing our attention on looking at all kinds of strategies for the festives season. And so for this edition of the Founder’s Corner, we’re looking at harnessing flexibility, what this means and how this is a much-needed strategy for this time of year.

But first…

The Founder’s Corner posts are based on previous segments from our weekly newsletter. So if you want this type of content first, check out the link at the end of this post!

Now, let’s dive into today’s post!

Harnessing Flexibility in the Festive Season

Staying motivated and actually getting through your to-do list during the holiday season can be a daunting task.

When you’re stressed about travel plans, family gatherings, and your endless holiday shopping list, it’s often tricky to maintain focus and fight off the distractions.

But what if I told you the answer is simple? It’s time to harness flexibility!

Now, embracing flexibility is not an all-or-nothing approach. There are numerous ways to bring more flexibility and autonomy to your workflow when preparing for the holiday season.

So how can being agile help you get the most out of the holidays, both in work and in life?

Being flexible allows you to:

  • Easily adapt to unexpected events without throwing you off course.
  • Reduce the stress of meeting those high standards.
  • Pivot, adapt your ideas, and direct your content.

Whether that is throwing in a few holiday episodes for your podcast, or inviting on special holiday guests, or simply finding ways to bring the holiday cheer into your show – that flexibility to be creative is key!

Okay, so not quite convinced that a flexible mindset will lead to succes?

Let’s dive into exactly why it’s important and how you can implement flexibility into the fabric of your day-to-day.

Why embrace flexibility?

  • Improved work-life balance.
  • Enhanced productivity.
  • Freedom to improvise.

How to implement flexibility?

  • Let go of perfectionism.
  • Learn to adapt.
  • Be creative!

So now that you know why it’s important and how you can implement flexibility, here are three mindsets to take with you in this holiday season.

Three Mindsets for Harnessing Flexibility in the Festive Season

harnessing flexibility in the festive season

ONE: Be selective, but nice

The holidays bring with them several additional to-do list items, so it is crucial to be picky with where you spend your time. Learning to say “no” and understanding when to delegate are some of the best tools in your holiday toolbox!

Stick to your plan, be selective with your time, and you will certainly avoid the unnecessary stress, leading to the inevitable fate of being the Grinch of the family!

TWO: Make your list, and check it twice ✔️

The best way to avoid the to-do list overwhelm is to divide your tasks into manageable chunks and then schedule them strategically into clearly defined steps.

Be thorough in your note-taking during the holiday season! New ideas for your podcast may come to you while you are hanging a string of lights – so don’t let those bright ideas slip away!

THREE: Wrap your workflow up as a gift to yourself

The most essential element that goes into managing your time wisely is creating a streamlined podcasting process. Holiday-proofing your workflow can be like giving yourself a big box with a bow on top, full of time for concentrating on what matters!

A Final Word on Flexibility

As the festivities kick off, now is as good a time as any to get a stronger handle on managing your podcast workflow. So let’s get it done!

BONUS: Five Step Holiday Podcasting Process

When setting out on this holiday season, implement these 5 steps to keep yourself on track with your podcast so you don’t miss a beat!

Quotes:

“My brand is all about helping others grow and supporting them in that growth. That’s why I started a podcast called Too Long; Don’t Listen, which aims to help support and empower students and young professionals to navigate their career decisions.” — @senda_ba [0:03:52]

“The reason I picked podcasts [as my platform of choice] was essentially how easy it is to consume the content that’s available to you — You can listen to podcasts anywhere, anytime.” — @senda_ba [0:04:51]

“Not only [are podcasts] easy to consume, but [they’re] also becoming more and more accessible and famous. We’re seeing it become more of a trend. I work in marketing and I see lots of brands using podcasting as a way to grow their audience or promote services and products.” — @senda_ba [0:05:19]

“Being able to record those conversations and have them available to anyone, anytime is a great way to inspire people at scale.” — @senda_ba [0:05:40]

“Always leverage your network [to find guests]. That’s the number one rule.” — @senda_ba [0:14:46]

“From a marketing perspective, [I’m] focusing on building [quality relationships] versus thinking of the number of listeners and the quantity of followers when they’re not really engaging. It loses its impact on your podcast and on your content.” — @senda_ba [0:17:32]
